UW-L Men Earn 4-Star Rating

Congratulations are in order for your local University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's team!

BadLUC was awarded a 4 star rating (out of 5) in the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) program by USA Ultimate.  Since leadership on college teams can change so quickly, USAU wants to encourage teams to put systems in place that help develop new players, pass on leadership, and serve the larger community.  The rating system was created this year to recognize these college teams.

Thanks to the work put in by the players, the team met many of USA Ultimate's best practices for a college program.  Everything from bylaws to youth programs to an A/B team split were considered in the application process.

If you have any ideas for the team, opportunities to serve in the community, or questions about how to get involved, we'd love to hear from you at mensultimate@uwlax.edu.

What's Happening This Spring

  • Winter League Session 2b ended with a fizzle. Repeal the 22nd went through pool play undefeated, but Bernie was denied a second chance to take them down due to Easter scheduling conflicts.
  • College ultimate is in full swing with all local teams heading to Old Capitol Open next weekend in Cedar Rapids, IA.
  • Summer League 2016 registration will open April 15.  Look for registration information on the main News page and the Summer League page.  Registration will close May 27 at 2pm.  Please register early.
  • Pick-up ultimate is gearing up as the weather gets nicer.  Watch for announcements here, on facebook, and on twitter.
  • Do you have middle or high school-aged children?  Do you know someone who does? Registration for the Youth Summer Program also opens April 1.  This is a great chance for kids to get involved in the best sport ever.
  • UW-L's Women's Ultimate and CURDS are teaming up to hold a Girls' Ultimate Movement (GUM) clinic in June.  Watch for more info on how girls in the community can participate in learning both ultimate and leadership skills.

Volunteer at College Nationals

In case you hadn't heard, Division I College Championships takes place in just over a week in Milwaukee.  This is the highest level of college ultimate in the US, and you should really go.

Better yet, you should volunteer to help out!  Read the info below, and go sign up for a day of volunteering.  I promise you'll enjoy yourself.

--------------------------

Milwaukee Ultimate Club and USAUltimate need your help! If you haven't already heard, MUC is hosting the Division 1 College Nationals Tournament (May 22nd-25th) in Milwaukee, and our goal is to put on the best tournament these college players have experienced.

Volunteer shift sign up can be completed at http://vols.pt/o4rzb9.

What's in it for you? In addition to the experience of contributing to the success of a national (and nationally renowned) event, you'll be on the scene to watch some of the highest level ultimate there is! Volunteers will have free admission on the day(s) of their shift(s). The first 150 volunteers will also be guaranteed a shirt, and there will be additional bonus swag given out based on hours worked and raffles. Sign up for as many shifts as you want!

The local arrangements committee will try to find housing if needed for out-of-town volunteers, but we can't guarantee everyone a free place to stay. We'll do our best, and we definitely have at least a few spots, though!

Sign up today at http://vols.pt/o4rzb9!

Springtime for ultimate!

Winter crept by, and now it's suddenly spring!  That means a few things for the CURDS community:

1.  Pick-up Games

As of now, pick-up games are scheduled by whoever wants to play, using facebook as a means for gathering people.  Sunday afternoons generally work well, as does Weigent Park.  We'll keep this up until there is regular attendance and more organization is required.  Goaltimate is also an option if anyone's interested.

2.  College Ultimate Season

There are several college ultimate teams in the region that work hard indoors all winter in order to play their competitive season in the spring.  They appreciate the support of the community, whether by participation in fundraisers, encouragement at pick-up games or league, and attendance at tournaments.  Watch the side-bar for regional college events.

3.  Summer League

Registration for summer league will open in early May, once we've hashed out a few more details and set up this year's registration forms.  Be on the look-out for emails, and start talking it up to your friends now.

Looking forward to seeing you out on the field!

TGI Fridays Fundraiser

Come out and support a local Ultimate team!

UW-L Women's Ultimate is hosting a fundraiser today, November 14, at TGI Fridays in Onalaska.  If you show the attached flyer (it's in larger form on the facebook page), 25% of your check will be donated to the GaLAXy women to help them pay for tournament bids and all the other necessaries for playing college Ultimate.

Hope to see you there!

Bound for Regionals

Congratulations to both Galaxy and LUC, our UW-L Women's and Men's Ultimate teams, on advancing to Regionals in the National College Championship Series!

Despite windy and drizzly conditions at Conference in Madison this weekend, both pulled through some tough games to qualify for Regionals in Appleton in two weeks.  It's a first-time qualification for both teams, and they really earned it.

If you're in Appleton the weekend of April 26-27, come out to the Scheels USA Youth Sports Complex and cheer them on!

Surprise weekend of Ultimate

It's Ultimate time again!

Unfortunately for the college teams, the grass is still too snowy and muddy to hold their tournament.  Fortunately for the community, they have opened up their turf field access to us.  Thank you, college teams! Here are the details.

FRIDAY (today, March 21) 5:00pm
Pick-up Game
Bring your light, dark, water, and cleats

SATURDAY (tomorrow, March 22)
Free Tournament

UWL and NDSU invite the community to form a team and join them in playing some games.  Some high school players from Sun Prairie will also join us, and a few community players may go to NDSU because they're low on numbers.

While this tournament is free, you will have some donating/helping with fundraising opportunities.  Please thank the college teams by helping with their causes.

- Capable Canines will be selling snacks and accepting donations.
- Galaxy women will be selling coupon books for local businesses ($10 each).

Details.
  • Field will be open around 9:30 am
  • Be at the field by 10:00 am to clarify teams and warm up.
  • People are okay to park in the adjacent lot (west of the stadium)
  • Cleats are okay on the turf
  • Games will be played to 13 and capped at 90 minutes so there isn't too much wait time for teams on a bye.
  • Games will hopefully be rolling by 10:30, noon, 1:30, and 3 if people want.
  • No drinking, as the event is on campus.  Anyone with alcohol will be kicked out and ban-hammered.
  • Bring lights and darks and food.  We will have water and an AT available.

SUNDAY (March 23): 2:30pm
Indoor Pick-up Game (donations accepted to help Women's Ultimate team)
Mitchell Hall at UWL
Wear tennis shoes, not cleats
Bring your light, dark, and water bottles

Get out and enjoy some Ultimate!
