Disc Golf Leagues and How They Work

Pettibone Park got hit pretty hard by the ash tree removal last year, but the Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club put in many hours of work to redesign and layout a great new disc golf course.  Have you checked it out yet?

If you're like me, you usually only head over to play the Pettibone course as a casual, summer afternoon activity.  But did you know that there are several disc golf leagues to play in?  Check out the spring and summer schedules below, and head over sometime to meet up with some other disc enthusiasts.

For those who don't know how disc golf leagues are run (very differently from Ultimate!), Oz from MVDGC kindly wrote up a description of how things go.  If you have any more questions, head over to the MVDGC facebook page, or just show up for a league!

  • Sundays, 10am: Free Bag Tag League
  • Tuesdays, 5:00/5:30pm/6:00pm (adjusted for daylight): Money Singles
  • Thursdays, 5:00/5:30/6:00pm (adjusted for daylight): Money Doubles
Sundays, 10am: Free Bag Tag League
Free League, good for beginners who just want to play with others and have some fun.

  1. Participants must sign up by 9:45am
  2. Tee off is 10:00am
  3. Players receive 1 point for showing up and 1 point for every person they beat.
  4. At the end of the round the player with the lowest score gets the lowest numbered bag tag.
  5. At the end of the season the player with the highest points gets the lowest numbered bag tag.
  6. Everyone must conduct themselves according to PDGA rules and within the Spirit of the Game with the exception of using lights on your discs during a glow round, profanity, alcohol, and dress code.
  7. Friendly side wagers can be made at the discretion of the participants, but are NOT required. If you lose your Bag Tag, please report it immediately.
  8. The Spirit of the Game: Disc golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the Spirit of the Game of disc golf.

Tuesdays, 5:00/5:30pm/6:00pm (adjusted for daylight): Money Singles
Professional and Amateur Divisions; Recreational Division can be created if enough interest
This league is more for the competitive and skilled types
  1. Participants must sign in 15 minutes before tee off.
  2. Everyone must conduct themselves according to PDGA rules and within Spirit of the Game with the exception of profanity, alcohol, and dress code.
  3. Tee off will be at 5pm during Spring and Fall and 6pm during Summer (adjusted for daylight).
  4. $7 entry fee, 100% Payout
  5. Optional CTP, Birdie, and Ace pools for $1 each. 100% Payout
  6. CTP (closest to pin): One hole will be chosen at random and the player whose drive ends up closest to the basket wins the pool. CTP will be paid out every night.
  7. Birdie Pool: Three holes are picked at random and if a player birdies all of them in a round they win the pool. If two or more players birdie the three holes, the pool gets split evenly
  8. Ace Pool: If a player gets a hole in one during a round they win the pool. If two or more players ace, the pool gets split evenly.

Thursdays, 5:00/5:30pm/6:00pm (adjusted for daylight): Money Doubles
Great for recreational players, and a great way to meet other disc golfers.

Winter Indoor Putting League

We couldn't get an Ultimate Winter League going this year (look for it next year!), but if you're still hankering for some winter disc sports, check out the Winter Indoor Putting League put together by the Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club.

It's every Tuesday night 6-8pm at Pearl Street Brewery starting January 7, and a disc golfer can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's a pay-as-you-attend sort of league.  Check it out!

New Disc Golf Courses in the Coulee Region

If you've been down to Pettibone Park in the last six months, you'll notice quite a few changes.  The city removed a surprising number of elm trees, thus altering the landscape and making much of the disc golf course unusable.  In the last couple of months, The Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club put a lot of time and effort in revamping the course to work around the new terrain and create a more challenging and entertaining course.   The result is now open, and I hear it is fantastic.  Head on down on one of these beautiful fall days and check it out!

There's also a new course just being installed in Sparta at Amundson Park (enter near River Road and Aspen Blvd).  This park is 110 acres of forests, so I can only imagine how fun the course will be.  Take an afternoon and find out!

If you're interested in disc golf for fun, leagues, or tournaments, Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club is the place to find out.  There are leagues many nights of the week, and a few local tournaments coming up soon.  Give it a try!

Disc Golf in the News

Our cousins in disc sports got a pretty nice write-up in the La Crosse Tribune.  The article highlights a few local players and lists all of the local courses.  Check it out!

Disc-related Events this Weekend

Not quite in shape for Ultimate yet?  Rather play a little disc golf to warm up your throws?

Our fellow regional disc enthusiasts in the Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club are hosting their first tournament of the spring at Justin Trails in Sparta this Saturday.  Entry is $30 and includes a disc.  For more details, check out the event page for the Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Spring Opener.

If you'd rather run around a bit more, head over to Mixed Nuts, a one-day mixed Ultimate tournament at UW-L on Saturday.  There will be spots on teams for community players.  Just bring your white, dark, cleats, and water!

Winter disc golf

Winter Rec Fest is coming up soon. Most of us at CURDS headquarters prefer broomball or curling, but these are not "Related Disc-sports." Disc golf, however, is.

7 Rivers Winter Sports Club and Three Rivers Outdoor are sponsoring a snowshoe Disc Golf tournament as part of La Crosse's annual Winter Rec Fest. This promises to be a family-friendly event, and multiple divisions are available for you to test your skill.

So if you've got that jones for disc, this is one way to fill it. And if we get really ambitious, maybe we can do a demo at a Coulee Region Chill game. (Just don't call travels. It's poor spirit when you're playing on ice.)

Disc Golf Roundup

'Tis the season for Disc Golf!

The Second Supper has a great article this week reviewing six disc golf courses in the area. All are within an easy drive, and some within a short walk or bike from downtown La Crosse. If you've been only to Pettibone, now's a good time to check out a few others!

For those needing disc golf discs, a new store called Buddha's Belly has opened on 6th street by Channel 8, and they have hundreds of discs for sale.

If you're interested in organized disc golf play (leagues, tournaments, and such) visit our friends at the Mississippi Valley Disc Golf Club.
