On-Field Guidelines
Zone Defense
Zone defense is prohibited. Due to its potential to increase dangerous plays, we prioritize safety over strategy in this case. Occasionally we may permit zone play if agreed upon beforehand.
PoachingWhen playing defense, poaching means intentionally positioning yourself far away from the opposing player you’re guarding in order to preemptively shut down or challenge other players/other parts of the field. Like zone, intentional poaching is strongly discouraged for the same safety reasons. CURDS is committed to creating a welcoming, low-risk playing environment.
Disc EquityUltimate is a team sport. We highly encourage players to share the disc and involve everyone on the field. This supports skill growth for all players and helps maintain a fun, inclusive league culture.
Spirit of the Game"Spirit of the Game is a set of principles which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed-upon rules, or the basic joy of play..." All players are expected to uphold Spirit. Be honest, be chill, play fair.
Player Safety & BodyControl All players are expected to maintain body control and avoid dangerous
plays at all times.
- Be mindful of speed, spacing, and your
surroundings—especially when chasing a disc or contesting a play.
- Reckless
layouts into crowds, wild bids, and high-speed collisions put everyone at risk
and will not be tolerated.
- Prioritize player safety over making the play. It's
just a point—we want everyone to go home healthy.
Alcohol
If you're 21 or older, you are welcome to discreetly enjoy adult beverages at
outdoor fields.
- Do not provide alcohol to minors
- Do not become excessively
drunk
- CURDS reserves the right to remove disorderly drunks
Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome! However, please keep your pets under control and be mindful of other dogs, kids, and flying discs. CURDS can ask for any animal to be removed if needed.
Watermelon RuleOn Tuesdays, CURDS provides watermelons. On Thursdays, the player(s) who catch the last goal of the game, bring the watermelon for the following Thursday. If buying a watermelon is an issue for you, let a board member, commissioner, or your captain know in advance so CURDS can get a melon instead.
Waiver & Participation RequirementAll players must sign a waiver with the City Parks and Recreation Department before
participating in any CURDS league activities.
- No waiver = no play
- Waivers
are typically signed in person during the first week of Summer League, or online
when you sign up.
- This is a city requirement and ensures liability protection
for all participants
Lightning
If you hear it, clear it. If you
see it, flee it."
- If lightning strikes within 10 miles (as shown on a weather
app), thunder is heard, or lightning is seen, play must be suspended
immediately.
- All players must clear the field and shelter in a car or
building.
- Wait 30 minutes from the last thunderclap or lightning sighting
before resuming play.
- If the Heat Index reaches 100°F (check
NOAA/National Weather Service data), play must be suspended.
- Hydrate often,
take breaks and let captains or organizers know if you feel unwell.
- Be aware of risks for hypothermia during colder games or if it’s
wet/rainy. Dress appropriately.
- If conditions become unsafe, CURDS may cancel
or delay games as needed.
- Games may be
canceled if fields are too wet or muddy, even if the weather seems playable.
-
This helps prevent field damage, ensures safe footing, and supports field
sustainability for the entire summer.
- CURDS shares field space with other
community sports and events—we appreciate everyone doing their part to protect
it.
CURDS utilizes the two DNR AQI sensors to determine the
official number.
• AQI 0 -100 - Games are on as scheduled
• AQI 101-150 - Games
are on as scheduled; captains are encouraged to discuss making modifications to
play for the safety of players. These modifications can include: one extra
time-out per half, extra “respiration breaks” when the score reaches 4 and 10,
and extra time between points. If a player is having issues breathing, they
should utilize the injury call and come off the field.
• AQI >150 - Games are
canceled.
