Info Post (4 of 4): Thursday Rec League

This summer the league has split between a Hat League (Tuesdays) and a Rec League (Thursdays).  While Hat League will look a little different (as covered by Bennett here), a lot in Rec League will look familiar.  Players will still be drafted onto teams they will play with the whole summer.  Captains will still lead the teams through the regular season, which will wrap up with the playoffs.

So is Rec league pretty much the same as last year's summer league?  Not exactly.  After four years and a lot of growth we looked at the league with fresh eyes and asked: are we meeting our goals?  We want to provide a great playing experience for everyone from complete rookies to long-time veterans.  Our goal is something for everyone.

So, how do we make the league more accessible?  Three new foundations for Rec League:

1. Inclusivity on the Field
This means everyone gets involved. We’ve done some things to help with that, including capping the # of men in the league (as covered by Sam here) and restricting poaching and zones.  However, ultimately it will come down to you sharing the disc.  Trust your teammates and they’ll trust you.
2. Fair Playing Time
This means everyone gets equitable playing time.  All new players should feel encouraged to get on the field.  It might mean sitting more than you're used to, or when you might not be tired yet.  It will help the league grow, which helps all of us.
3. Safe Play
This means we put everyone’s safety above winning.  That means backing off instead of going for the risky highlight play.  If you are a new player, it might mean learning from experienced players on how to make a safe play.

So what do the changes mean?  It means that, more than ever, Rec League is all about the team.
