Hello, Coulee disc sports community! This is the first in a series of four posts from the CURDS Board of Directors discussing different aspects of our summer 2017 programs.
Let’s talk gender ratio. Thursday’s coed Recreational League has a limit on the number of male registrants. Currently, that cap is 52 males. Completion of the two-part registration gets one on the first-come-first-in list.
The primary reason behind this decision is the Board’s commitment to gender equity. Creating a league that has a reasonable, if not truly equitable, ratio of male-to-female participants is only one step to creating a community that values, incorporates, and appreciates women and girls.
Frankly, women are getting spread too thin, and this detracts from both their fun and the unique coed environment that has traditionally been the hallmark of Thursday evenings. Additionally, unlimited male participation leads to too many men on the bench or an even less equitable on-field ratio.
Creating an equitable gender ratio is one small step toward fostering a community-wide attitude that actively seeks to empower females through participation and positivity. Summer League saw a slight decline in female participation from 2015 to 2016. It’s more than “throw to your women.” It’s creating an environment in which women are valued and feel comfortable.
