Bonobo SPAMshake

When the first round of the MS Open was delayed by two hours due to rain, Bonobo Handshake was a little worried that the weekend was going to be a repeat of rained-out Wisconsin Swiss.  They decided to keep their minds off this possibility, however, by using the extra time to visit Austin, Minnesota's most popular tourist site - The SPAM Museum.

Did you know that SPAM includes both pork and ham?  Or that South Korea is the largest consumer of SPAM?  Bonobo Handshake does.  Have you ever tried a SPAMburger or deep friend SPAM curds?  Bonobo Handshake has.

Let us just say that this might have been the best rain delay ever.

The rest of the day was, fortunately, spent playing Ultimate.  The wind was busy pushing the storm clouds out of the way, but also spent most of the day pushing the disc around as well.  Handshake played with patience, working both the short passes and the downwind hucks.  The soft fields make for easier cushioning for layout D's, particularly by Bennet and Andrew.  Unfortunately, it took a few games for Handhshake to really get into the groove, and they ended their day winless.

Sunday morning Bonobo Handshake was ready bright and early with refilled coolers.  The first game passed pretty quickly.  Handshake won the second round bye, however, with enthusiastic heckling of Zu-Betcha and Spirit Foul.  Things really clicked in the third round, and Handshake pulled out some amazing hucks and great reads against Drunk Skunks.  The win advanced Handshake to the 5th place game against Zu-Betcha, our new friends.

Annie won us the downwind with her accurate hammer throw, and Handshake went up 3-0, but Zu-Betcha's zone provided some difficulty, turning the tide until Zu-Betcha was up 11-6.  Handshake mustered their mojo, fortified themselves, and made an amazing comeback to within two before Zu-Bethcha scored the final point.

Then Handhshake proposed a Beer-in-Hand game and won.  We know what we're good at.

Despite the losses, it was a great weekend. Sarah and Shane made a great showing at their first tournament, Sarah scoring her first three points in a tournament and Shane playing some great downfield defense.  There was great camaraderie on the sideline, excellent spirit on the field, and a definite improvement over the course of the tournament.

We're looking forward to some more great times in August, when we have two more tournaments.  If you'd like to play with Bonobo Handshake (especially women), visit our Traveling Team page for dates and who to contact!
